This guide provides quick access to library and reputable web resources for the Hometown Project

Start Your Research Here

Have you exhausted your search of Google and Goolgle Scholar?

Use GW 's Library Catalog to discover scholarly and non-scholarly sources about your hometown or place of importance.

  • Make a short list of place names that represent your hometown or place of importance. This may include the name of the place itself, name of its municipality, county, or district in which it is located, name of the state or equivalent in which it resides, or a region or country name.

  • Make a short list of search terms representing your subject area of interest. Some examples may include history, environmental history, climate, geology, fauna, flora, infrastructure, transportation, land use and planning, industry, agriculture, housing, etc.

  • Conduct your search making use of the list of names along with search terms representing your subject area of focus. Some examples may include: Jackson Wyoming environmental history; Cook County Illinois housing; Doha Qatar transportation; Madagascar fisheries, etc.

  • Place these search terms in the horizontal bar toward the top of the GW LAI's webpage to search the GW & our Consortium libraries full catalog for scholarly and non-scholarly sources.

  • Find additional resources by searching the Subjects Databases. Some relevant areas for your research may include GeographyEnvironmental Studies, Sociology, International Relations, Datasets and Statistics, Historical and Retrospective, and Newspapers and News SourcesNote: These resources must be searched separately as not all will be findable thru the horizontal search bar on the library's homepage.

  • As you have questions, consult our asynchronous library research skills module or our Ask Us Services which enables you to ask your questions in various ways

Search Tips
