Quick guide to online citation organization tools, including RefWorks & Zotero

What Is Zotero?

IMPORTANT: If you use the optional Zotero Connector for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, please upgrade to the latest version (5.0.104 or later), and be sure not to use the "Enable proxy redirection" feature with our old proxy. See below for the proxy settings, and see the Zotero downloads page to get the Connector.

Zotero is a free research and citation management tool that helps you collect and organize citations and sources. Zotero works online and with word processors to recognize and capture information and generate citations.  All of your citations and resources are collected and displayed in one interface, where you can upload and access content in a variety of formats including PDFs, images, snapshots of web pages, audio and video files, and more. Zotero also enables the creation of shared library folders, which are extremely helpful for any kind of collaborative research.

New! All GW users can now get unlimited personal and group cloud storage in Zotero. You must have your GW email address on your Zotero account. No other registration is required.

Zotero Connector settings

If you use the optional Zotero Connector plugin for your browser, be sure not to use the "Enable proxy redirection" feature with our old proxy server. This can prevent you from accessing GW's subscriptions!

  1. in the browser with Zotero Connector, navigate to the Zotero Connector settings.
  2. Click on the Proxies tab.
  3. In the Configured Proxies list, if you have any URLs containing "proxygw" in them, please remove these by selecting and clicking on the "-" button at the bottom of the list.
  4. Uncheck the tickbox next to Enable proxy redirection. (Or if you have access to another institution's proxy, you can use "Enable proxy redirection" with that. Just make sure you're not using our old proxygw among the configured proxies.)
