Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management

DRC has studied a broad range of disaster types, including hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous chemical incidents, plane crashes, civil disturbances, and riots. This site includes descriptions of current projects, as well as extensive bibliographies of DRC publications, including books, articles, preliminary papers, etc. Only some of the publications are available full-text online; others can be purchased through the Center. DisasterHistory.org grew out of a research network of China historians with the aim of making scholarship on major disasters and humanitarian crises readily accessible to the public. Currently focused on disasters in China’s past, as we expand our scope we invite contributions from experts on the subject of disasters, broadly defined, in all regions and periods of history. As we develop, we also aim to serve as a forum of collaborative work and data-sharing for researchers from around the world.
Our disaster features are produced by specialists on the events they write for here on DisasterHistory.org while our disaster briefs are researched and written by postgraduate and undergraduate students, whose work is reviewed by members of our team. Copyright in the contents of each article remains with the author(s).

We are the National Science Foundation's designated information clearinghouse for the societal dimensions of hazards and disasters. We are dedicated to reducing disaster harm by:
Translating and sharing hazards and disaster research and information;
Building connections between researchers, nonprofit and private sector professionals, the media, policy makers, and local, state, and federal officials;
Advancing social science and interdisciplinary knowledge, with a special emphasis on the most vulnerable populations and places; and
Training and mentoring a diverse next generation of hazards and disaster professionals.
