GW Student Resources and Policies for Online Courses

This guide consolidates the relevant GW policies and resources that help online students learning.

Policies and Course Procedures

University Policies

Policies at GW are created and maintained with the purpose of encouraging a culture of ethical, social, professional, and legal behavior and responsibility. Policies serve to uphold GW's values and mission while protecting its people and reputation. A University Policy connects the university's mission to the everyday actions of its community and clarifies the institution's expectations of its individual members.

Members of the GW community are responsible for adhering to and acting in accordance with university policies. Noncompliance with university policies may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination or dismissal. Unit-specific consequences for policy noncompliance are outlined in policies, if applicable. As an employer, the university reserves the right to determine the applicability of policies and also reserves the right to change policies, procedures, and guidance at any time.

If you are interested in developing a university policy, please contact the Office of Ethics, Compliance, and Risk at comply@gwu.edu for additional information. Please note that a university policy must fall within the jurisdiction of a university office.

FERPA

Personal Information

In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, GW's student privacy policy prohibits the disclosure of information contained in a student's educational records to third parties without the express written consent of the student or former student. Please access the Registrar's site for further details on student FERPA rights.

Copyright

The university encourages the creation and publication of scholarly, technical, literary and artistic works as part of its educational mission. Generally, when the Faculty, Librarians or Students, in pursuit of their normal scholarly, professional, or academic responsibilities, including normal use of the university's physical facilities, by their own initiative create copyrightable works, the copyright and any resulting royalties vest in the Faculty, Librarian, or Student as author of the copyrighted work. When Staff or Students create copyrightable works within the scope of their employment duties at the university, the copyright will generally belong to the university. For Faculty and Librarians, the university only claims ownership of the copyright if the work qualifies as a Work Made for Hire, or if the work's creation required Substantial Use of university resources, as defined below.

The purpose of this policy is to provide administrative guidance on copyrightable works and ownership and to comply with the copyright laws.
