DC Vernacular Music Archive

The DC Vernacular Music Archive is an interdisciplinary collection that will include topics to interest scholars in the fields of Gender Studies, History, American Studies, English, Urban Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, and Africana Studies.  Such an archive will help increase interest in contemporary music movements (many of which have political and economic implications) and local music history among George Washington students, faculty, the greater research community as well as the greater Washington, DC community. Moreover the archive will help preserve at-risk materials that are either on unstable media or ephemeral in nature both difficult to discover and protect. Aligning with the goals of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at GW, this archive will reach out to the city’s residents in unique ways, strengthening the bond between GW and the DC community and allowing GW to become a larger force in preserving and celebrating the city’s culture.
